Bug out boat?

Anyone here have a sailboat or houseboat as a safe haven? I've been considering boats for a long time, and the market may be flooded (no pun intended) with liquidated (ha, ha) boats soon if the dow sinks lower (yuk, yuk). Who has knowledge, or even an intelligent opinion?

Types of boats?

Where to keep it?

Legal considerations?

Prices?

Size:people ratio?

Very under rated bug out vechicle.

From St. Louis You could get to the Gulf of Mexico or the great lakes within a week.

Best to check your local waters to make sure you don't go to big or small.

I have always thought that a sailboat and the know how to use it would be great for shtf. Don't need any fuel. Many are big enough to live on and you can get to some really secluded places to avoid all the zombies.

Might have to worry about pirates though.

If I had the money for a really nice one and time to learn how to handle it. I think it would be a serious consideration.

The only way I would consider a boat with two or more people is they would have to be super-compatible. One person bugout is best, even if it means taking two boats. Even a boat with a spare, for example a dinghy or a canoe. That way you could "go for supplies, or something" while the main boat was moored.

I can help.

What region are you in? Do you have any boating experience / sailing experience at all? How many passengers would you like to take with you. What kind of volume of prep supplies are we talking about? Do you have a target area to flea to wtshtf? Give me a little more info, and I can definitely provide some guidance.

A house boat in the Louisiana swamps rates VERY high on my list..You would NEVER be found if you didnt want to be.

The Louisiana Swamps are very spread out but harldly a good hiding area, the back country is marked off and usually owned by either a family or a corporation (Oil Drilling Rights) and parking you boat in the Fresh water areas means you will be seen and known about in le pais belle acadien, nous souviens tou le gentry qui vivre ici mon ami. Loose translation- Small towns, big families and everybody knows everybody in the Beautiful Cajun Country! If you do not have a working knowledge of French, the Swamps are a difficult place for a stranger to hide!

The Marsh and prarie areas are salt water flows and with no vegitationover 3-5 feet high, your boat will be ssen miles off. In the Forested Sweetwater Swamp, navigation is tricky there and you had better know your route since the water depth can go to 0 FT quickly.

I never got the impression that those people would be very government friendly though. More likely that they would take care of things on their own.
.
Maybe I am wrong. I know one thing, I almost got into a pretty tight pickle in some cypress swamps. Dang, those things make EVERY turn look the same!

You realize then you would be living in a swamp right? Houseboats are not really "boats", they are not very mobile and they certainly don't move quickly.

As far as a "bug out boat" I like the idea, wish I would have thought of it sooner :)

I was thinking more of a remote location that is inhospitable, easy to hide you cache of goods, and is a LOT of trouble for someone to actually find you.

Boat can't haul enough goods....unless you plan on picking up goods in your bug out port. My folks have a 40 foot boat on the Great Lakes.....can carry alot and go to a lot of places.....like Canada easily - up in to the "bush" - lots of fresh water. ....but still not pratical. You need to be land based to last this one out.

When TSHTF and there is worldwide food and fuel issues....you will not be able to sail into your favorite banana republic and pick up a load of goods.

Better have a hobby farm.

I can carry plenty of goods, make my own water, catch fish and conch my biggest expense when we are in the bahamas 6 months out of the year is internet, i need it cause my wife telecommutes, that aside I could live there for close to nothing and you'd NEVER find me, I know of one hole you can't even see as being there from the air :D Solar, wind, coconuts, i can live off the ocean much easier then I could live off land and I would be far harder to find. Plus you land dwellers make me nervous :)

Shocked that only one person mentioned pirates.

Just like every other survivalist bug-out fantasy that's out there. It's extremely romanticized, and very unlikely to end up well.

It's just like the highly fortified shelter in the middle of nowhere. Eventually, you will be found and your plans and defenses will be put to the test. Sounds like a short, horrible existance.

Rebuilding locally, and being part of a community will be one's only hope for survival. Btw, that rebuilding will take place only after surviving the years of incredibly harsh times when the crash really gets into full swing.
